Take the stress, worry, and over-thinking out of traveling abroad with the use of travel money cards (sometimes known as “prepaid credit cards”).
These cards are convenient and safe and save you from having to carry cash or your regular credit card.
Ahead of time you “pre-load” the amount of money that you have decided to budget into your currency card account, choose your currency (usually dollar, sterling pound, or Euro), your card is mailed to you and is similar to a typical credit or debit card, and you activate your account when you are ready. You can use the prepaid credit card anywhere where it is accepted, and it is similar to a traveler’s check in many ways. The MasterCard and Visa prepaid travel money cards are more readily accepted across the world compared to other cards.
The best benefits are that you can usually get a better exchange rate on foreign currencies and low cash withdrawal fees (but don’t take out small amounts at a time because there will probably be a minimum fee for each withdrawal). You can easily keep track of what you are spending so that you can come back from your holiday having had fun but not running up a mountain of bills that will need to be paid at a later date.
These travel money cards can be purchased at some supermarkets in other countries or perhaps the post office or some banks. They can also be purchased by telephone or online. These cards are not linked to any bank account because they are paid for in advance, and there is no interest charged to you because the money was prepaid ahead of time. Like a traveler’s check, if you lose your card, you will normally be issued an emergency card immediately.
One tip to remember is not to change money at an airport because the exchange rate is apt to be high. Using a travel prepaid credit card, you will generally get a higher exchange rate than normal bank rates, and these cards are usually commission-free. Also, your exchange rate is set, so you don’t have to worry about fluctuating rates.
